Kolbe-schmitt reaction was discovered by tow scientists , Kolbe and schmitt.

Reaction statement :

The reaction of phenol with 10% NaOH and CO₂ at 398 k  temperature and 4-7 bar pressure gives sodium salicylate then acidification of sodium salicylate gives white residue of salicylic acid .  reaction is known as Kolbe-schmitt reaction .

In these reaction we get a ortho- product.

In the presence of potassium phenoxide this reaction will give a pera -product .

Uses of salicylic acid :

Salicylic acid is used as a synthetic material of medicines  aspirin and methyl salicylate (balm).

 

(i)                  methyl  salicylate

        synthesis :

 

The well known name of Methyl salicylate is balm.

Methyl salicylate is used as a analgesic drug.

Methyl salicylate have a smell like wintergreen’s oil.

 

 

(ii)                Aspirin

       synthesis :

 

Aspirin is used as a pain killer.

It is help in prevent to blood Agglutination .
